Promoting Thinking Skills - Year 3 Fieldwork Sustainable development is about improving our wellbeing without jeopardising anyone's opportunities to do the same locally, globally or in the future. Background The aim of the Year 3 Fieldwork week is to present to the children first hand the interrelationships between aspects such as land use, the loss of biodiversity, the impacts of development and how culture and identity affect the way we interpret and value things. Through this week, pupils develop and learn about the impacts of decisions, how needs and rights are not always easy to balance. For instance they consider the needs of the local sand quarry workers in Sande to earn a living and the need to preserve wetland habitats. Taking the children into the field and looking at the relationship between industry, nature and recreation helps children with the difficult skill of making value judgements. By the end of the week the children were able to appreciate first hand some of the local development dilemmas. Follow up work was later carried out in the classroom. | |
